GRSE at a Glance

The genesis of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) dates back to 1884 when it started its journey as a small workshop to repair vessels of River Steam Navigation Company. In 1934, the Company was registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1913 and started its new journey as Garden Reach Workshops (GRW) Limited and played an active role during the 2nd World War wherein over 4000 vessels were repaired here. The Company was taken over by the Government of India in 1960. GRSE has the distinction of becoming the first shipyard of independent India to build a warship for Indian Navy, the Seaward Defence Boat (SDB) INS Ajay in 1961. GRSE also built the first ever Indian Export Warship "CGS Barracuda" for the Govt. of Mauritius, delivered FPV "SCG PS Zoroaster" to the Govt. of Seychelles and an Ocean Going Cargo & Passenger Ferry "MV MA Lisha" for Cooperative Republic of Guyana. The shipyard was conferred the status of a Miniratna Category I Company in 2006. Over the last 6 decades, GRSE has built over 785 platforms including 100+ warships for Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and Government of Mauritius & Seychelles Coast Guard - the highest warships built & delivered by any Indian shipyard till date.

The primary role of this ISO 9001, 14001, 18001, 45001, 50001 & PCMM Level 2 certified shipyard has been building warships and other vessels for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. With its modern shipbuilding infrastructure, state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Lab and a 100+ strong design team drawing on 6 decades of shipbuilding expertise, from Frigates, Corvettes, Fleet Tanker, Landing Ship Tank, Landing Craft Utility to Survey Vessels, Offshore Patrol Vessels & Fast Attack Crafts - the repertoire is rich and varied.Post modernization and revitalisation, the shipyard has the capacity to build 20 ships (08 large & 12 small) concurrently. Noteworthy accolades include Raksha Mantri Award 2022 in Designing the most Silent Ship for Indian Navy for ASW Operations, Defence Ministers award for Excellence for In-house designed effort for Offshore Patrol Vessel for Govt. of Mauritius, CGS Barracuda, Best Performing Defence Shipyard for four years in a row. Apart from Ship Building and Ship Repair, GRSE has also diversified into engineering business with a product profile of pre-fabricated steel bridges, various deck machinery items and assembly, as well as testing & overhauling of marine diesel engines.

Make In India

GRSE has developed in-house capabilities to design & build most modern warships in the country. Presently the shipyard is building 03 P17A Advanced Frigates, 04 Survey Vessels (Large), 08 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts, 01 Fast Patrol Vessel, 01 Ocean Going Passenger and Cargo Ferry for Cooperative Republic of Guyana and 06 Patrol Boats for Bangladesh Govt. Taking the Government’s Make in India Initiative forward, the ASW Corvettes and LCUs delivered by GRSE over the last few years, had an indigenous content of over 90%, a major step towards achieving self-reliance in state of the art warship design and construction. GRSE targets to continue its efforts on indigenization proportions of over 90 % in all its ships slated for future delivery. The Engineering Division of GRSE has developed capabilities to design and manufacture Engineering Equipment/ Items with the Launch of “First of it’s kind” Portable Assault Bridge, Double Lane Bridge installed in Flaghill, Dokalam, Sikkim. The Deck Machinery unit has also developed “Rail-less Helicopter Traversing System” in collaboration with M/s MTS, UK, for installation on warships. GRSE has achieved 72% indigenous content and is a prime supplier of Rail-less Helicopter Traversing System to Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.......

Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan

The Company has joined the call of the Prime Minister for Swachh Bharat Mission. Some of the initiatives include :-Construction of toilets in local schools under Swachh Vidyalaya, Improvement of Anganwadi centres of Metiabruz in collaboration with CII, Training to school children for sanitation and hygiene practices under Swachh Bharat Mission, Study by TISS for Swachh Bharat Mission Roadmap, Contribution to Swachh Bharat Kosh and Clean Ganga Fund. GRSE has contributed Rs. 75 lakh towards Swachh Bharat Kosh and of Rs. 25 lakh towards Clean Ganga Fund...
