Commissioning of INS Arnala-the 1st ASW Shallow Water Craft for Indian Navy: Another Glorious Chapter added to GRSE’s annals

Kolkata (18 June, 2025): The breaking of the commissioning pennant on the masthead of the INS Arnala with the last note of the National Anthem, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, added yet another glorious chapter to the annals of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd.

The INS Arnala, built by GRSE, is the first Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) to be commissioned in the Indian Navy. It has the distinction of being the largest diesel engine-waterjet propelled warship to be inducted by the Indian Navy till now.

he chief guest at the ceremony was Gen Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Among the others present were Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan, CWP&A, Cmde P R Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE, ADG Donny Michael, Coast Guard Commander (Eastern Seaboard) and other senior officials from Indian Navy & GRSE.

GRSE is building seven more ASW SWCs for the Navy. The INS Arnala is special as it was for this warship that GRSE was awarded the Raksha Mantri s Award 2022, for designing the ‘most silent ship .

Commissioning of this warship will add a shot in the arm for the Indian Navy with respect to its Shallow Water ASW capabilities. The ship was constructed through a PPP model, a first of its kind in India, where a major PSU shipyard like GRSE collaborated with a capable private shipyard, L&T Kattupalli.

INS Arnala will add necessary punch to the Indian Navy s capability to patrol coastal areas where enemy submarines could be lurking. The ship has been named after an island with a historic fort, off the Maharashtra Coast. It has over 80% indigenous content, underscoring GRSE’s commitment towards the Government of India’s Atmanirbharta and ‘Make in India’ policies.

Though smaller in size as compared to Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes of the Kamorta Class built and delivered to the Navy by GRSE earlier, the 77.6-metre-long and 10.5-metre-wide ASW SWCs pack a punch. They are capable of full-scale sub-surface surveillance of coastal waters as well as Search and Attack. They can also carry out coordinated anti-submarine operations with aircraft. These ships have Combat Management Systems on board and will be armed with lightweight torpedoes as well as anti-submarine warfare rockets. These ships will have a complement of 57 personnel, including seven officers.

With three water jets (fitted to marine diesel engines), the INS Arnala is extremely agile and maneuverable. A great advantage is that it requires a draught of only 2.7-metres, allowing it to access the coasts easily in search of sub-surface threats.

In his address, General Anil Chauhan, PVSM, UYSM, Chief of Defence Staff, Congratulated the Chairman & Managing Director of GRSE and the talented and committed workforce of the shipyard for delivering a capable and combat worthy asset to the nation. He expressed confidence that the ship, equipped with superior anti-submarine warfare and mine-laying capabilities, would play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s vast coastline. He noted that the carefully selected weapons and sensors would make the vessel a highly potent platform and a force enabler for effective fleet operations. As the first of its class, he remarked, its performance would set a benchmark for the subsequent ships in the series.

In his address during the occasion, Cmde P R Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE, highlighted the shipyard’s expertise in building the most complex and technologically advanced warships for the Indian Navy. GRSE is now building 16 more warships, including three P17A advanced stealth frigates, seven ASW SWCs, two Survey Vessels Large and four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels. GRSE is also building four research vessels, 13 hybrid ferries for the Government of West Bengal and eight multi-purpose cargo vessels for a German company. GRSE has also emerged the lowest bidder for the Next Generation Corvettes that the Navy wants to acquire.

GRSE s New Modular Foot Suspension Bridge Boosts National Infrastructure, Aligned with Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Kolkata (03 June, 2025): G In a landmark achievement, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) launched a first-of-its-kind Modular Foot Suspension Bridge (FSB) on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at its Belur Unit in Kolkata. Designed for longer spans of up to 400 feet, this fully indigenous bridge marks a significant milestone in GRSE’s efforts to support national self-reliance in infrastructure development.

The FSB was launched by Shri Natarajan Partheepan, General Manager (Bailey Bridge), GRSE in the presence of Cmde Ramesh Menon, Chief General Manager (Bailey Bridge & DEP), and other senior officials of GRSE. This initiative is a major step toward fulfilling the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and reflects GRSE’s ongoing commitment to diversification and innovation in engineering.

The newly launched Modular Foot Suspension Bridge (FSB) features a steel decking carriageway with a width ranging from 1.8 to 2.2 meters, conforming to Indian Road Congress (IRC) Load Class, 18R and 400 Kg/sqm live load standards. This bridge is 100% indigenous and uniquely modular, making it the only bridge of its kind currently available in India.

One of the most significant advantages of this innovation is the rapid deployment capability. The 400-foot bridge can be launched without piers in under 30 days. This makes it an ideal solution for improving road connectivity in border regions, supporting operational readiness of security forces, and responding swiftly to disaster situations.

While GRSE is widely known for shipbuilding and ship repair, it is the only defence public sector shipyard to have successfully diversified into the engineering domain, notably in prefabricated steel bridges. The shipyard’s Bailey Bridge Unit has a distinguished history of designing, developing, and installing bridges in remote and difficult terrains across India and abroad. Till date, GRSE has delivered over 5,900 Bailey Bridges to the Indian Army, BRO, NHIDCL, various state and central PWDs, and neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Order Book Expected to Soar – GRSE Wins Competitive Bid for Next-Generation Corvettes

Kolkata (May 22, 2025): In a development that speaks volumes about the company s shipbuilding expertise, business acumen and proficiency in design, production & financial management, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the construction of Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) for the Indian Navy.

GRSE is the only Indian shipyard to have delivered 111 warships to the country s maritime forces & friendly foreign nations, including 06 Missile Corvettes ( Khukri & Kora Class) and 04 ASW Corvettes (Kamorta Class).

The shipyard participated in the competitive bidding process and has emerged as lowest bidder. GRSE will thus be awarded the contract to build five (05) Next Generation Corvettes at an estimated cost of approx. Rs 25,000 Crore.

These Next-Generation Corvettes shall be capable of fulfilling the roles of Offensive SSM attack, Anti-Missile Defence, Surface Action Groups for Maritime Strikes, ASW and many other Maritime Operations. The warship will also incorporate Green Warship design features, energy efficient & environment friendly technologies.

GRSE is already building four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV) for the Navy, apart from three Advanced Guided Missile Frigates, eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts of which one has already been delivered to Indian Navy and four Survey Vessels (Large) of which two have been delivered.

Meanwhile, on anticipated lines, the order for an Ocean-Going Tug for Bangladesh stands cancelled based on mutual discussions between GRSE and the Customer. This order though would not have impact on GRSE’s finances as the order is worth only US$ 21 million (approximately Rs 179.75 crore) and would have contributed a mere 0.8% to GRSE’s existing order book of Rs 22,680.75 crore as on March 31, 2025.

800 Vessels, One Vision: GRSE continues to shape the seas with the delivery of INS Arnala, marking a new era in shipbuilding

Kolkata (08 May 2025):In a landmark achievement, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, delivered the first ASW Shallow Water Craft Arnala, to Indian Navy. Incidentally during 2022, GRSE was awarded the Raksha Mantri s Award for designing the Arnala, termed as a most silent ship.

Simultaneous contracts for construction of 16 ASW SWCs (8 by GRSE and 8 by another PSU Shipyard) were concluded by Indian Navy, and with the delivery of Arnala, the first of these 16 vessels by GRSE, the Indian Navy will get a shot in the arm with respect to its Shallow Water ASW capabilities. The ship was constructed through a PPP model, a first of its kind in India, where a major PSU shipyard collaborated with a capable private shipyard, L&T Kattupalli.

INS Arnala will add necessary punch to the Indian Navy s capability to patrol coastal areas where enemy submarines could be lurking. The ship has been, named after an island with a historic fort, off the Maharashtra Coast, has nearly 88% indigenous content, underscoring GRSE s commitment towards the Government of India’s Atmanirbharta policy.

A great advantage is that she only requires a draught of 2.7-metres, allowing her to access the coasts easily in search of sub-surface threats. GRSE is now building 16 more warships, including three P17A advanced stealth frigates, seven ASW SWCs, two Survey Vessels Large and four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels. Apart from this, the shipyard is building 24 other vessels, nine of which are export platforms.
