Proud Moment for GRSE Ahead of Independence Day: Hands Over its 113th Warship Survey Vessel (Large) Ikshak to Indian Navy
Kolkata (August 14, 2025): In yet another achievement, showcasing the shipyards ability to build and deliver advanced warships, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd delivered the Ikshak to the Navy on Thursday, August 14th, 2025.
Ikshak the name stands for Guide is the third in a series of four Survey Vessels (Large) being built by GRSE. The second ship of this class, INS Nirdeshak, was delivered on October 8th, 2024, while the first one INS Sandhayak was handed over to the Navy on December 4th, 2023.
This delivery comes less than a month after GRSE handed over the Advanced Guided Missile Frigate Himgiri to the Navy.
Incidentally, the Sandhayak-class of Survey Vessels (Large), or SVLs, including the Ikshak, are also the largest such platforms to be built in India and operated by the Navy.
The Ikshak is the 802nd ship and the 113th warship to be built by GRSE. It is the 75th warship to be delivered to the Navy. No other shipyard in India has achieved this feat.
The relationship between GRSE and the Navy goes back 64 years to 1961 when the shipyard delivered the first indigenous warship INS Ajay. Since then, 74 more warships have been added to the list, helping the Navy advance from a buyer to a builder. This is in keeping with the Governments Atmanirbharta policy.
The 110-metre-long Ikshak will join INS Sandhayak and INS Nirdeshak after being commissioned and keep the Navy supplied with vital survey data which is very crucial for operational purposes. The maps and charts prepared on the basis of this survey data are also used by commercial shipping.
This prestigious warship was accepted on behalf of Indian Navy by Cmde Arvind Chari, CSO (Tech) (South).
These ships can each carry a helicopter, participate in low-intensity combat and function as hospital ships. They can also be used for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
Propelled by two marine diesel engines combined with fixed-pitch propellers and fitted with bow and stern thrusters to help the ships manoeuvre at low speeds during surveys, they are ideally suited to carry out their designated operations. Fully designed by GRSE to meet the requirements of the Indian Navy, Ikshak was built using Integrated Construction technology. This was in compliance with applicable provisions and regulations of the Classification Society (IRS).
GRSE is now building 14 more warships for the Navy, including two P17A Advanced Guided Missile Frigates, one SVL, seven Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts and four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels.

Reviving Heritage: GRSE Breathes New Life into Kolkatas Iconic Ghats
Kolkata (August 14, 2025): As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and its continued efforts to maintain and promote the rich heritage of Kolkata, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has undertaken the beautification of two iconic ghats on the banks of the River Hooghly- the culturally revered Mayer Ghat at Bagbazar. & the historic Suriname Ghat at Garden Reach.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed on August 6, 2025, by Shri Rajeev Shrivastava, GM(HR&A), GRSE and Shri Santanu Mitra, Chief Engineer, SMPK, in the presence of Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE & Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMPK. Capt (IN) P Sunilkumar (Retd.), Director (Corporate Planning & Personnel) and other senior officials from GRSE & SMPK were present on the occasion.
Mayer Ghat, located near Bagbazar in North Kolkata, is renowned for its spiritual and cultural significance. The ghat is historically associated with Ma Sarada, (the revered spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa), who used the ghat during her stay at her residence, Udbodhan. The beautification initiative will preserve and enhance this revered landmark, ensuring its upkeep for future generations.
The Suriname Ghat has immense historical significance. It is from here that the sail ship Lalla departed on February 26, 1873, for the Dutch colony of Suriname, with 410 indentured labourers and their families. That was the start of what is today known as the Indian diaspora in the Republic of Suriname.
As many as 34,304 Indians are known to have reached Suriname in 63 more ships that left the Suriname Ghat till 1916. Today, there are over 175,000 people of Indian origin in Suriname, forming over 35% of the total population of the country.
The Mai Baap Memorial at the Ghat and the sculpture of a man and a woman carrying potlis on their heads, is a symbol of resilience that India and Indians have displayed over ages. When they left India, the men were allowed to carry two dhotis and two kurtas and the women, two saris. Some of them carried religious texts such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata with them. At that time, they were paid 25-pence a week. Today their descendants have made it big in the worlds of business, arts, sports and politics.
GRSE is not new to the Caribbean, of which Suriname is a part. In 2023, the shipyard delivered the Ma Lisha, an ocean-going, passenger-cum-cargo ferry to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana that shares its border with Suriname. This ferry, the first built for that country in India, is the largest and fastest in Guyana. Indentured labourers also travelled to Guyana from Kolkata to work in the sugarcane plantations.
The restoration and beautification of Mayer Ghat and Suriname Ghat will not only preserve two significant heritage sites but also serve as a powerful reminder of important chapters in Indias history, attracting visitors and fostering awareness of the countrys cultural legacy.

In a historic achievement, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd delivered Himgiri, the Advanced Guided-Missile Frigate and the first of three being built by GRSE under the Indian Navy s Project 17A, on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
With the delivery of Himgiri, the first of three GRSE-built frigates, the Indian Navy gets a significant boost to its advanced guided-missile frigates capabilities.
Himgiri is the 801st vessel to be built and delivered by GRSE. Of these 112 are warships - a record unmatched by any shipyard in the country, till date.
These 149-metre-long, 6,670-tonne warships are the largest and the most sophisticated Guided-Missile frigates built by GRSE in its 65-year history as a Defence Public Sector Undertaking. The three ships are worth over 21,833.36 crore and a significant portion of this value has fuelled MSMEs, start-ups, and OEMs while also contributing to employment generation, thereby helping to nourish the shipbuilding ecosystem of our Nation. This aligns closely with the Government of India s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, which aims to promote self-reliance by encouraging indigenous manufacturing and strengthening local supply chains.
This prestigious warship was accepted on behalf of Indian Navy by RAdm Ravnish Seth, Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command.
Launched on December 14, 2020, Himgiri is equipped with BrahMos anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, along with Barak 8 anti-aircraft missiles, representing a major leap in naval strike and defensive capabilities. With high indigenous content, the ship stands as a strong symbol of India s self-reliance in defence production.
The frigate is powered by a combination of diesel engines and gas turbines and is equipped with advanced AESA radar and modern combat systems. It is capable of anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare operations. The platform offers advanced survivability and improved operational capabilities.
Himgiri also features comfortable accommodation for 225 personnel and provides full aviation facilities for operation of helicopters onboard. Currently, GRSE is working on 15 warships across four different classes for the Indian Navy. Of these, Androth, the 2nd ASWSWC being built by GRSE and Ikshak, the 3rd Survey Vessel Large have successfully completed its contractor sea trials and are being readied for delivery. The remaining 13 warships are at various stages of construction, underscoring GRSE s robust shipbuilding pipeline and commitment to timely delivery. GRSE has also emerged as the lowest bidder for the Next Generation Corvettes that the Navy plans to acquire and expects to conclude the contract to build Five of them soon.

Historic Launch: GRSE Rolls Out Final ASW SWC Ajay
Kolkata (July 21, 2025): Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd launched the 8th and last ship in a series of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWCs), it is building for the Navy, on Monday, 21 July 25.
The ship, named Ajay, was launched by Smt Priya Deshmukh, wife of Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, AVSM, VSM, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy. Vice Admiral Deshmukh was the chief guest at the occasion.
Among the others present were Cmde P R Hari IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE, Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, Shri Abhishek Ranjan, IOFS, CVO, GRSE, and senior officials from Indian Navy & GRSE.
This launch connects past with present: INS Ajay, originally delivered in 1961 as Indias first indigenous warship built by GRSE, set the path for domestic defence shipbuilding. Todays Ajay, carries forward that proud heritage of GRSEs shipbuilding process.
The first warship of this series of ASW Shallow Water Crafts, INS Arnala, was commissioned into the Navy on June 18, 2025. Androth, the second ship, has also completed its contractor sea trials successfully and is ready to be delivered.
Ajay was launched less than nine months after the launch of Abhay, the 7th vessel in the series. This highlights GRSEs efforts to maintain delivery schedules.
While the primary role of these unique ASWSWCs is to keep the waters near the coasts clear of enemy submarines, they are versatile platforms and can participate in a variety of operations. These ships are designed and built with low draughts and they are thus capable of coastal operations. They are equally capable of Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and laying mines.
These 77.6-metre-long and 10.5-metre-wide extremely potent warships are also capable of full-scale sub-surface surveillance in coastal waters and can carry out operations against surface platforms as well. They can carry out coordinated anti-submarine operations with aircraft.
These warships pack a lethal anti-submarine suite comprising lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets and mines. They are also armed with 30 mm Close-in Weapons System and 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote-Control Guns. They are fitted with a Hull Mounted Sonar and a Low-Frequency Variable Depth Sonar for effective underwater surveillance.
Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh mentioned that GRSE has progressed leaps and bounds and become one of the premier defence shipyards of the country, having a unique distinction of building more than 110 warships.
Cmde Hari noted how the years to come will be extremely crucial for GRSE as several ships are now at various stages of outfitting and will be delivered subsequently.

GRSE, a proud partner of BORDER ROADS ORGANISATION, launches Multi-Span 280 feet (02x140 feet) Double Lane Modular Steel bridge at U/T of Ladakh under Project Himank (BRO)
Kolkata, 16 July 2025: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd., (GRSE), achieved yet another momentous milestone by fabricating and launching a multi-span double lane modular bridge of 280 feet span (02x140 feet) at KM 72.625 on Phobrang-Marshimik-La Hot-Spring Road, Union territory of Ladakh on 10 July 2025. The bridge has been handed over to Project Himank (Border Roads Organisation).
This is for the first time in India that a Multi-Span Double Lane Modular Bridge has been launched, that too within a short time-span of just twenty (20) days in one of the most remote and difficult terrains of the country.
This landmark achievement was executed in the very high altitude of Ladakh with the team braving extreme cold weather conditions in the most critical forward area along India's borders, facilitating seamless connectivity for troop and equipment deployment for the Indian Army.
Unparalleled in its innovation, the Double-Lane Steel Bridge developed by GRSE stands as the sole indigenous solution of its kind, in line with India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. Under the MoU signed with Border Roads Organisation (BRO), GRSE have already supplied 56 nos. Bridges Pan -India.
The bridges have a carriageway width of 7.5 meters, permitting plying of two-way traffic in compliance with specifications laid down by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH). High tensile steel of Grade E-410 ensures high strength, long life and low temperature applications. The galvanized surface finish ensures easier maintenance and longer service life. Load Class IRC 70R permits movement of both Wheeled/ Tracked Vehicles of up to 100 / 70 MT. The modular concept ensures easier transportation of bridge components to remote areas and faster erection of bridges in a short span of 30 to 45 days.
In August 2022, GRSE attained an exclusive distinction by becoming the sole Indian organization qualified for the esteemed Green Channel Certification for Portable Steel Bridges (Bailey Type) from the Indian Army.
GRSE's Portable Steel Bridge Division has pushed the boundaries of innovation through intensive research and development efforts, resulting in the creation of superior versions of portable bridge designs. Over 5,900 portable steel bridges have already been supplied by GRSE to Indian Army, Border Roads Organisation, NHIDCL, State Public Works Departments and other Government agencies. These versatile bridges, originally intended for disaster management, have also garnered international recognition, being exported to friendly nations including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.
